Well, Once Again, spring is right around the corner......so now is the time to put out the Welcome Mat for our Feathered Friends!!  Birds are more fun than TV...especially when you can enjoy them up close.   There are good guys, bad guys, ladies, loud mouths, daredevils, braggarts, and bullies.

FEEDER FACTS:   When you know what treats and nooks birds love best, its easy to Attract all kinds of feathered friends.  For example:  The Cardinal prefers to eat from a platform, while the Goldfinch favors hanging tube-feeders; do you know the Goldfinch eats while hanging upside down?  Finches crave Nyjer seed but tanagers won't touch it. Shy songbirds prefer nibbling down low; woodpeckers can't hover and hummingbirds can't cling. Black-capped chickadees need at least 150 sunflower seeds a day.....now that's a whole lot of visits to your feeder!  Do the Wrens a big favor - save your tincans because they love to nest in them, as well as discarded hats, coffeepots, jars - you better go thru your attic and use your imagination.

FEED FACTS:   Use black oil sunflower seed since many birds refuse to eat most of the filler in cheaper mixes. Finches, chickadees and nuthatches love a small, slender black seed called niger or nyger. Hang a mesh bag of it from a post or line. In the winter, suet feeders attract woodpeckers, chickadees and nuthatches. You can buy suet cakes where seed is sold;  OR mix your own as follows:  FATTY MIXTURE:  Mix 1/2 cup suet, lard, or vegetable shortening with 2 1/2 cups cornmeal or uncooked oats until well blended.  Options:  Add dried fruit (chopped up) or chopped nuts.

*****(NOTE: See below for a place to purchase lumber from if you would rather build your own houses and feeders).

Hummingbird Nectar
...which you can make yourself: Mix 1 cup of very hot water with 1/4 cup white sugar, stirring until dissolved. Cool before using.  (It isn't necessary to add red food coloring)!  Do you know you can HARM your hummers if you use brown sugar or honey in feeders?   HOW DO HUMMERS HOVER?  The secret is their unique wing structure - and fantastic pecs!!

Learning Bird Songs and Calls

Learning to identify birds by their songs and calls is an important and enjoyable aspect of birding!  You can learn the different songs of birds by getting a CD or cassette study course.  I recommend the Birding by Ear series from Richard Walton.  His spoken commentary is lively and witty, making his course as fun as it is educational.

Bird houses are fun to have and attract many nesting birds. Bluebirds, robins, wrens, chickadees, warblers, swallows, woodpeckers, martins, owls, and many other types of birds will nest in a bird house. Each type of bird has different house requirements, including the house's dimensions, entrance hole size, and house placement.

Now, just hang your birdhouses, sit back and enjoy
